Power tools make repetitive tasks faster and open up projects hand tools cannot match. But buying the wrong ones — or in the wrong order — is expensive. Here are the five to buy, in order.

1. Cordless Drill/Driver

If you do not have one yet. 12V or 20V, under $80.

2. Circular Saw

Replaces the hand saw for straight cuts. $50–$80 corded. Pair with a straightedge guide.

3. Random Orbital Sander

Swirl-free finish, saves hours. $40–$70.

4. Jigsaw

Cuts curves and irregular shapes. Safest power saw for beginners. $40–$80.

5. Pocket Hole Jig

Creates hidden, strong joints. Kreg 320 is the standard. About $50.

What About a Table Saw?

Not a first purchase. $300+, needs space, steep safety curve. A circular saw handles 90% of beginner needs.
